Award Over the past year, more than 150 new golf courses opened in the U.S.,
bringing the total 18-hole public courses to more than 10,400. With all the
choices out there, how is a golfer to choose?
Places to Play began in 1963 as a magazine insert. With this 6th edition, some
20,000 GOLF DIGEST readers have submitted literally hundreds of thousands of
ballots, sharing their opinion and experiences on more than 3,500 of the very
best courses in the United States, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean. On the
February 2003 Golf Digest issue, the ballots were inserted and voters were
asked to vote based on courses that they had played during the previous year.
Readers used a five-point scale for five separate criteria: the overall golf
experience, the value for the money, the standard of service at the facility,
the overall conditioning of the course, and the normal pace of play for an
18-hole round of golf.
In addition, readers were invited to write comments on their experiences at
each of the courses they rated - both the good and the bad. This 6th edition of
Best places to play also gives you the country's best - only courses earning
three stars or above are listed.
The star rating scale was used, 1 = Basic Golf, 2 = Good, but not great, 3 =
Very good. Tell a friend it's worth getting off the highway to play, 4 =
Outstanding. Plan your next vacation around it, and 5 = Golf at its absolute
best. Pay any price to play at least once in your life. Readers star ratings
were averaged, then compiled on a bell curve to reflect a course's relative
strength.
Shawnee was rated 4 stars!
